The Reality of Homelessness in New York City
Homelessness remains one of the most urgent humanitarian challenges facing New York City. Recent reports show that more than 140,000 people across New York are experiencing homelessness, with the majority located in New York City.
Key facts highlight the scale of the crisis:
-
Over 89,000 individuals have been living in New York City shelters, nearly doubling in recent years.
-
Nearly one in three homeless individuals in New York are children, demonstrating how deeply families are affected.
-
Thousands more live unsheltered on streets, subways, and public spaces, facing extreme weather and dangerous conditions.
-
Street homelessness has continued to rise, with over 4,500 people estimated to be living unsheltered in recent counts.
Behind these statistics are real people—parents, veterans, young adults, and seniors—many facing job loss, rising housing costs, medical challenges, or unexpected hardships.
Our Holiday Outreach Mission
During the holiday season, our program organizes outreach events across New York City where volunteers provide:
-
Quick holiday meals and food distribution
-
Winter coats, hats, gloves, and warm clothing
-
Hygiene kits and essential care packages
-
Blankets and cold-weather supplies
-
Words of encouragement and human connection
For many individuals experiencing homelessness, these moments of kindness can restore hope and remind them that they are not forgotten.
Carrying Mama Reid’s Legacy Forward
Mama Reid believed that compassion should be lived out through action. Her legacy was built on the simple but powerful idea that community means taking care of one another.
T
his program exists to continue the work she started—serving those in need with dignity, respect, and love. Every meal served, every coat distributed, and every conversation shared helps keep her spirit of generosity alive.
By gathering together each holiday season, we ensure that Mama Reid’s legacy continues to shine as a light for those facing some of life’s darkest moments.
